Hi! I just played the game, and I have some constructive criticism. I don't know what's currently planned for the game, so I'll say all my thoughts.
When it comes to the character creator, it feels a bit lacking. I personally did not feel represent by any of the models at all. I think a good way to go about it is to seperate it into two different things. Bodytype and skin color. First being able to choose the bodytype, and after it is chosen, choosing the skin color. It would keep the screen unclutered, and permit more representation.
I quite love the artstyle, it's cute, simple, and it really relaxes me in a way I enjoy. Though my main gripe's with the animations. They feel choppy and disorienting, they way the characters keep jumping left and right makes it hard to move around in a way that is satisfying.
The music is really good, my only problem is that it doesn't loop properly and it's distracting. Making the loops feel more seamless would help to stay focused on the experience.
The battles are definitely unbalanced, so reworking them a little bit could make it all feel more fair.
Minor nitpick, but when it comes to area that are unacessible for a short duration, maybe having it be more seamless could be nice. For example adding a crowd to block it, or a tree blocking the way, anything that isn't an invisible wall basically.
But the thing I think most about is more so related to the story. There's these mythical creatures, that are seen by most as being just fairytales, but if you walk like 10 meters, they're right here. It makes the world feel quite small. It's hard to believe that no one has ventured into these woods when they seem to be right next to the town. I think that having traversing these woods as being laiden with obstacles and weird detours could really help. Instead of being a straight line, it could zigzag, maybe you'd have to move a rock or two to continue your journey, jump over a river. It all seems too easy, when it shouldn't be.
I think this game has a lot of potential, I really enjoyed my experience so far, it feels like a work in progress to something really great. I can't wait to see it getting better and better! :]
I really appreciate your feedback! I normally dislike criticism but you made some good points and were very helpful with it!
I can’t do much about the music not having smooth transitions because RPG maker lacks in that area and there isn’t a good plugin for music related things unfortunately. (As far as I’m aware)
I know that the battle system is a bit iffy right now, I’m going to balance it out as much as I can and make sure it’s better in the final game.
As for the character sprites and animations being wonky, I wasn’t striving for complete perfection as this is technically my first game (I started this in February, then I made Fern or Faye in 2 weeks for a jam) so I didn’t really look for a good plug in to make more frames, and make them smoother etc. For the character customization, your idea for choosing different body types and skin color is a great idea, I’m a bigger person myself so I understand how important representation for that can be, when I first started that part of the game, I didn’t really know how to add more options due to the one room, but I will definitely take that into consideration and potentially add more customization options!
I haven’t really noticed how off the animations can look until about a month ago, but I’ve already made so many sprites that I don’t feel like re-doing, because again, it’s my first game and it doesn’t have to be perfect in my opinion but that’s definitely something I’m going to work on in the future!
As for the story and how easy it is to find the creatures, admittedly this flew over my head a little bit. There are characters that do know about the creatures but they weren’t shown. I wanted the game to be easy for kids which is why I designed it the way I did, but like I said it went over my head on how small it seems haha.
Thank you so much for your feedback! Sorry if this reply is a giant book but I’m very passionate about this project!
Thank you for taking my feedback into consideration! Best of luck with everything, I'll be following this project closely :]
